Here are some sobering statistics from the College Board and Rutgers’ Writing Program’s Associate Director, Michael Goeller:

99 – Percent of Rutgers 1st year students who were in the top half of their graduating class

41 – Percent of Rutgers 1st year students who were in the top 10th of their graduating class

540-640 – SAT Writing score for middle 50% of incoming Rutgers Freshmen

33 – Percent of incoming freshmen who are required to take REMEDIAL writing courses after taking the Rutgers Writing Placement Test

50 – Percent of students who FAIL their first essay for 355:101 Expository Writing.

100 – Percent of students who must pass 355:101 Expository Writing in order to graduate from Rutgers
